Questions to Ask Yourself:

WHAT DO YOU WANT?
There are so many options when considering a creative career.  Asking 'what do you want from life' is a great place to start. Do you want to run a business? Is your aim to make lots of money? Do you want to be part of a team?  Do you want freedom in your life?

It's also really important to make sure you play to your strengths and staff your weaknesses. Find out what you are good at and do that.  Find out what you are bad at and find ways to make that work for you.
DO YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF?
  • put the work in to hone your skills whether that's knowing your craft or feeding your creativity
  • Adobe Creative Suite is your friend - for photography, get to know Photoshop and Lightroom.  For design, get to know Illustrator and InDesign. I've found lots of use for Premiere Pro and After Effects as well
  • don't pay too much but some online courses can be helpful: LinkedIn Learning/Creative Live/Masterclass
  • read up - for photography, it's camera settings, editing and general theory.  For design, colour theory, typography, negative space, alignment etc.
  • industry standards for digital & print
DO YOU HAVE A PORTFOLIO?
  • create work to test yourself
  • be generous (do stuff for free)
  • know your value (don’t always do  stuff for free)
  • study & imitate how work was created - who are your favourite creators?  Work out how they do what they do.  For photography, there's often camera information that will help you see the settings and how they've achieved the image
  • pay attention to detail
  • get experience - either with other creatives or your own projects
ARE YOU DEVELOPING PERSONALLY?
  • learn how to listen to what clients want - it’s a key skill to success
  • practice putting across your vision (with grace) whilst collaborating
  • develop resilience and flexibility
  • creative industries are people-based, invest in that
  • being curious helps, feed your creativity
