an informal hello...I am... a lover of tea, conversation and a good book... very proudly from Guernsey... delighted to live in Cumbria... slightly geeky with films...
I first started taking photographs with a clown camera I had as a child. Whether there were actual photographs produced or whether said camera was a toy, I'm not entirely sure... however a passion started that led me start my business in 2006 and has continued ever since! There's received wisdom that you 'must' separate your creative work out and have individual websites for your genres... however that's not who I am. I love all the areas I work in and I'm happy to share them together. Who I am informs how I work and what I do. To work creatively with people - whether it be portraits and weddings, gardens and plants, individuals or organisations - is a joy. It's an honour to do what I do... thank you! Rachael |

Artist bio
Rachael de la Mare is a visual creative from Guernsey currently based in the Lake District. Her work is shaped by storytelling and the importance of memory. In her still and motion photography, Rachael captures stories that are often in the process of continual change. Through her education in Guernsey and early work as a photographic assistant, Rachael developed her choice of focus and technical skill before moving to the UK to study. She received a BA (Hons) in Literature and Ancient History from The University of Birmingham. During her degree, she launched her photography business alongside her studies, combining her love of narrative and art. Over the last 20 years as ‘de la Mare Creative’, Rachael has photographed individuals and families across many moments of celebration in life as well as working collaboratively with larger organisations to create print-based and digital media. She has been commissioned by businesses, schools, councils, art networks and charities to create a variety of informative, emotive and artistic photographs, films and graphic design projects. For her film work, Rachael won the Adobe Video Competition in 2014 and exhibited three films at the Peter Scott Gallery in Lancaster as part of the 2017 ‘Telling in Full: Ekphrasis Exhibition’. In 2021, she directed a short social justice film for the Kaleidoscope art network which was based around a spoken poem; focusing on social justice, the film was shot in collaboration with multiple artists across the North West of England to partner with a series of talks by Natalie Williams who is Chief Executive of the poverty and social action organisation Jubilee+. During the pandemic restrictions in 2020, Rachael began to work with garden designers and specialist growers as she expanded to include portraiture of plants as part of her business. She has been able to explore ideas of beauty, memory and home by capturing collections in her two homes such as the National Collection of Nerines in Guernsey and the ‘Dalemain’ Mecanopsis in the Lake District. It was the National Collection of Nerines that led to her first solo photographic exhibition at Sula Gallery in 2022. As a member of The British Institute of Professional Photographers, Rachael has been a speaker at The Photography and Video Show presenting on the topic ‘Even a Bad Photo’s a Memory: Why We Photograph’ at the ExCel Centre in London. In 2025, a collaborative submission with mixed media textiles artist Hayley Mallett won the States of Guernsey Banknotes competition. Photographed by Rachael and then recreated by Hayley in thread and bead, their banknote designs - all examples of the islands’ nature that bring a sense of pride and joy in their shared home island - were selected for the front of the family of notes for the Bailiwick of Guernsey. exhibitions
